THE LAMENTATIONS OF AN ORDINARY GHANAIAN

 IDDI MUHAYU-DEEN'S FOLDER

Whereas in other jurisdictions, laws are seen as ENFORCEMENT, here in John Mahama's Ghana, we see laws as ordinary ENACTMENTS. We have all the fine laws in the World to make Ghana an ideal place of abode. Our problem however, is the inherent emasculate enforcement approach associated with our law enforcement regime which is making it almost impossible to realize the necessary culture of deterrent we are yearning for. I bet you, if Ghana is able to enforce even 40% of her existing laws, this perennial quagmire of flood and other societal mishaps including the culture of indiscipline and impunity as well as age-long corruption which has permeated every facet of national life would all become a thing of the past.

Moving forward, we need an ATTITUDINAL CHANGE but beyond that, we also need an efficacious enforcement regime since most of us (ordinary Ghanaians) are generally stubborn and only tend to obey laws because we want to avoid punishment. Because I am not in a position to enforce all the laws of Ghana, that is why I voted for a government, pay my taxes to the government and gave the government unlimited power to ensure the right things are done and to protect my right and interest.

So, I have done my part and expect government to also do its part. I therefore feel betrayed and uncomfortable when government turns back to blame me for the wrongs that we see in society. Like Mensah Otabil said, you and I (the citizenry) must rise up to the occasion and loudly demand for a better deal from our government. We mustn't settle for less. We mustn't glorify mediocrity. This is a call to national duty. Our country must work again and that, has to start from you.

Thank you.
