NDC FINALLY LOSES ITS GRIP OF THE ASAWASI CONSTITUENCY IN THE ASHANTI REGION ...AS HON. MUNTAKA MUBARAK OF THE NDC LOSES GROUND TO HON. ALIDU SEIDU OF THE NPP

IDDI MUHAYU-DEEN'S FOLDER

The Asawasi Constituency is arguably, the number one centre of attraction during every General Elections because of its strategic significance. The Constituency, which is largely dominated by Muslims and described as the headquarters of Zongo in the country, has since its creation, been a SAFE SEAT for the NDC, despite the fact that it is located in the ‘political World Bank’ of the NPP, the Ashanti Region.

In fact, it is the Constituency that tells us that a significant majority of the inhabitants of our Zongos, many of whom are Muslims, still identify with the NDC rather than the NPP willy-nilly. And the fact that it is located in the NPP stronghold (A/R), makes the geopolitics and electoral dynamics even more fascinating. Indeed, it is against this backdrop that the NDC would do everything to retain this seat, whereas the NPP on the other hand, would do everything to make history and COMPLETELY take charge of its political World Bank.

However, my independent checks, having traveled to the Constituency, interacted with the constituents and spoken to the people that matter, reveal that the NDC is losing the Seat. The party [NDC] has become conspicuously unpopular on the ground due to the gross NEGLECT, DESPONDENCY and IMPOVERISHMENT the constituents have been subjected to by the John Mahama government and in particular, the outgoing MP of the area, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak of ‘chechenga fame’. In fact, poverty is not only endemic but also pandemic in the Asawasi Constituency, with joblessness and hopefulness being the lot of the youth in the area.

Fortunately for these disgruntled Asawasi youth, the NPP has, for the first time, been able to present a very strong and credible candidate, who happens to be one of their own, a grassroot politician from the deepest part of the trenches, a popular radio presenter and assembly member. This industrious gentleman by name, Hon. Alidu Seidu has put up the most spirited campaign ever to unseat the current NDC MP, whose growing infamy in the Asawasi Constituency could be seen and felt by even the blind.

It is therefore not surprising hearing Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, upon sensing his imminent and inevitable defeat, accusing the NPP of trying to rig the parliamentary elections in Asawasi, a Constituency that is said to be an NDC safe Seat. Obviously, a lot has indeed changed in the Constituency and the tables have completely turned. You can’t always take the people for granted.

The woes of this "chechenga MP" [Muntaka] has been exacerbated by the rising popularity of Alhaji Mahamoud Bawumia among Muslims and Zongo folks. In fact, when Alhaji Bawumia led a "campaign keep fit" meant to shore up support for Hon. Alidu and the NPP in the Asawasi Constituency, the crowd that was witnessed was not only tumultuous and electrifying, but also unprecedented. Some political pundits likened that crowd to what was seen in the famous kumepreko demonstration. And to think that this is a typical Zongo Constituency, makes the development even more intriguing.

Of course, this development has since sent "kpokpogbligbli shivers" down the spine of the NDCs compelling President John Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama of fortiz fame [the president's brother], some Ministers of State and all the people that matter in the top echelon of the NDC to storm the Asawasi Constituency on a number of occasions in a forlorn attempt to rescue Muntaka. Unfortunately, their move is not jellying at all. Even the ‘campaign health walk’ they organised to rally support for Muntaka which was led by the President himself, could not record half of the crowd that attended the one led by Alhaji Bawumia, which had taken place a week earlier in the same constituency.

This is in spite of the fact that, the NDC had bussed several people from other constituencies and regions to Asawasi in order to augment the number of participants and create a misleading impression about their current support base in the constituency. Interestingly, the ‘campaign keep fit’ has become a weekly ritual, that is observed by both the NPP and the NDC in the Asawasi constituency every Sunday morning and has become a battle of ‘numbers’. Of course, the NPP records more numbers than the NDC. I was there last weekend (Sunday, 13th Nov.) together with the National Nasara Coordinator, Mr. Abdulai Kamal-Deen and witnessed everything.

The difference was so obvious and in the NPP’s favour even though, we had seen people being bussed from other Constituencies to join the NDC procession. Some of these people we spoke to, confessed that they were persuaded with money and other goodies. Unlike Halidu, Hon. Muntaka could not even leave the comfort of his V8 to join his supporters on the precession. Well, that is what too much power can do to man. To the doubting thomases, I encourage you to visit the Constituency on any Sunday morning to ascertain the veracity of my claims.

It is pretty obvious from the foregoing that the good people of the Asawasi Constituency, just like many Constituencies across the country, have given the strongest indication yet of their unwavering willingness to VOTE for CHANGE on December 7. They have had enough of the lies; enough of the deception; enough of the incompetence; enough of the mismanagement and therefore enough of Hon. Muntaka Mubarak and the NDC. They have accordingly resolved to vote massively for Hon. Alidu Seidu and the NPP. It is time to make Asawasi and Ghana work again. It is time to bring back the NPP to RESTORE our hope.
