IDDI MUHAYU-DEEN WRITES…
The role education plays in
the transformative development of any country cannot be overemphasized. It
remains the most powerful tool that can CHANGE the World for the better as observed
by the Great Nelson Mandela of Blessed Memory. It is against this backdrop that
throughout history, we have had individuals, corporate entities, private
enterprises and governments across the globe making conscious efforts to
promote education because that is the surest way of securing the future.
The story is not different
in Ghana since we can also pride ourselves with some of these renowned
individuals or groups who have paid their dues and contributed substantially to
the souring popularity of education in the country. They have, in most cases,
sacrificed their last dime in the pursuit of our national aims and
aspirations using education as the conduit.
Since one turn they say,
deserves another, you would think that as a nation, we would do enough to
acknowledge and reward their legendary efforts for God and country under the
circumstances. However, the story is completely different from what ought to be
the norm and this, saddens me. Indeed, it is not only a step in the right
direction but also a moral obligation on us to recognize these illustrious
persons. We must all realize that a society that does not appreciate its heroes
is certainly not worth dying for and thus, has no future.
In their unwavering resolve
to changing this narrative, student leaders have themselves, taken up the
challenge to reward deserving individuals, corporate entities and public
institutions that are promoting education in diverse ways. After all, they say,
if Mohammed wouldn’t go to the mountain, the mountain would surely come to
Mohammed. So, if the State does not see the need to institutionalize an award
scheme for her heroes in the enterprise of education, the students themselves,
who are the immediate beneficiaries of the good works of these heroes, have
risen to the occasion.
By this, they have
introduced and institutionalized an awards scheme dubbed, National Students'
Awards (NSA) which is a flagship programme spearheaded by NSA-Ghana and the
leadership of all student organizations/unions in the country to recognize and
award individuals, corporate organizations and students who are contributing
significantly towards the development of education in Ghana.
The maiden edition of the
Awards which was held in October, 2015 at the Auditorium of Zenith University
recorded a REMARKABLE SUCCESS leaving nostalgic legacy in the minds of patrons.
If you missed the show last year, you have nothing to worry; because you have
an opportunity to be part of the second edition (NSA ’16) which promises to be
even more thrilling and entertaining. It is slated for Saturday 17th September,
2016 at the Great Hall of University of Ghana at 7 pm. To learn more about the
Awards, please visit their official website on: www.nsaghana.org
With these few words, I
make a solemn pledge to supporting the prestigious National Students' Awards
and wish to call on you to do same. Let’s all get involved in honouring our
outstanding colleagues who are deserving of honour. Let’s recognize and appreciate
the invaluable contribution of our own to making education, an enviable tool
for national growth and development. Let’s meet and celebrate student activism
for the love of God and country.
Thank you.
