THE
AYARIGA ISSUES AND MATTERS ARISING
Iddi Muhayu-Deen writes...
Anything
other than the invocation of Standing Order 37(1) by the Speaker of Parliament
regarding Ayariga's dishonourable conduct, would be most disappointing. The
Order referenced above talks about suspension
of a Member of Parliament for stated misbehaviour including acting in a
manner that affronts the dignity of the August House. Ayariga did more than
that and hence does not by any stretch of imagination; deserve to be associated
with the Honourable title.
How
can a whole Member of Parliament be spreading career damaging allegations against a Minister of State as well as
his own leader, Minority Chief Whip and the 1st Deputy Speaker of the nation's
Parliament without any shred of evidence? And when he is asked to prove his
case, he tells us that he made those wild allegations based on rumours and
hearsay. Can you imagine? Is this what we should expect from a Havard trained
lawyer? If so, then I guess I better get trained in Ghana. I also expect a
Havard trained lawyer to know that the court is not bound to use one
methodology in handling a particular case. We all watched the proceedings of
the Joe Ghartey Committee when he appeared before them.
Ayariga
was asked whether he had any evidence to prove that Hon. Boakye Agyarko gave
money to Hon. Osei Owusu to be distributed to Minority Members on the
Appointments Committee through Hon. Muntaka Mubarak. Ayariga responded that he
had NO such evidence and that, everything he did was based on rumours and
hearsay. Yet, he found it expedient to go to town with it and try to damage the
hard won reputation of these distinguished members of society. Even Hon.
Muntaka, whom he said is his key witness
in this "Ayarigated scandal", categorically
denied all that was attributed to him by Ayariga.
Let's
even assume without admitting that Ayariga and his colleagues indeed received
money from their Chief Whip, commonsense should have informed Ayariga that it
couldn't have been bribe money because nobody will bribe you by giving you
money without telling you what cause of action he wants you to take. How can
somebody give you money without telling you where it is coming from and the
motive behind it and yet you conclude that the money is meant to bribe you? Are
you okay?
Talking
about spreading rumors, does Ayariga know the rumors we've heard about him
including his faculty and sexual disposition? Would I be fair to him if I went
to town spreading these rumors? I think it would be very irresponsible on my
part to contemplate such ungodly act. But that is exactly what Ayariga is doing
to Hon. Boakye Agyarko, Hon. Osei Owusu and Hon. Muntaka Mubarak. I won't be
that irresponsible even though they say, what is good for the goose is also
good for the gander.
The
most annoying thing is that, after the Committee found him guilty and asked him
to simply apologize and get reprimanded by the Speaker, he is stubbornly
proving defiant. He won't do this honourable thing to mitigate the damage his
'foolhardiness' had caused to the reputation of these respected individuals he
sought to indict for no justifiable reasons. If by close of day today, Ayariga
doesn't render an unqualified apology to the respected trio, then I advise them
to go to court and sue him for damages. The thoughts of an ardent follower of
parliamentary democracy and a citizen of
Ghana not a spectator.
