Response to teamOhene (former NUGS Presidential hopeful)

Iddi Muhayu-Deen writes…

I have, with considerable attention, taken notice of your several write-ups meant to be a reply to my latest article on the 2016 NUGS congress dubbed, TELLING THE NUGS STORY - PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE 2016 CONGRESS (FINAL PART OF THE FULL STORY). In your statements, you did not only contest my claims but you also called me a LIAR, among other unsavory remarks you made against my person. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t respond, but for some justifiable reasons, I wish to come in and set the records straight. You have also dared me to produce by midday, a copy of the electoral register, which you claimed you never saw. Well, I am living up to that challenge now.

But before that, I need not to remind you of the kind of relationship that exists between Frank Ohene and I, which goes beyond one of friendship. He is a great guy and I hate to do this but you have called for it. I am someone who has an uncompromising disposition in matters of principles and upholding the truth. Even my “political tradition”, I don’t spare them when they go wrong; how much more any other person. That is who I am and I’ve been very consistent with my conviction, which everyone can attest to.

First and foremost, your candidate almost gave up when he realized that the odds were not going to favour him. I personally spoke to him and encouraged him to come to Hohoe for the congress because in this enterprise of politics and elections, it could be anybody’s game. He came to the congress ground on Day 3, which is certainly inexplicable. You guys had less than two days to campaign.

Under the circumstances, it required no gift of clairvoyance for anybody that was present at the congress ground, to know you wouldn’t win the elections. The Ascorbic fever was all over the place and could be seen, heard and experienced by even the trees at the St. Francis College of Education and the Hohoe mountains. So as a political strategy, it was in your interest to ensure that the elections were NOT held on that day for obvious reasons.

The issue of the voters register you raised, was just a means to that end, even though, legally, that argument was tenable. As a matter of fact, when you went to the NUGS court, the first relief you sought, was to place an INJUNCTION on the entire elections, obviously for political expediency. You cared little about the implication of that action on the delegates that had travelled from all over the country to Hohoe. You also didn’t care about the implications of that on the Union. Fortunately, the court unanimously REFUSED to grant this request of yours.

The court however granted you your second relief and ordered that the register be made available to you pursuant to Article 73 of the NUGS constitution. Like I said in my previous article, at this moment, the register was ready and I had seen a copy. It was prepared by the outgoing NUGS FC and TREASURER in accordance with our convention and presented to the EC.

I have, in response to your challenge, attached a copy of the register for your indulgence. Hope this settles the matter. Indeed, the EC Chair (Samuel Amoako Kusi), upon receipt of the register at this moment, officially communicated the content (in respect of the number of institutions and expected voter population)  to all the polling agents, with the exception of your agent, Waxy, who was nowhere to be found at the time, after several attempts to reach him.

When you came out of the courtroom, you immediately wrote a letter to the EC claiming you were pulling out of the race regardless of the fact that everything was set for actual voting to commence. However, the electoral commissioner did not receive your letter, and this is consistent with the electoral laws of Ghana. So officially and technically, you cannot say that you boycotted the elections. With this factual narrative, it will be highly preposterous for anyone to suggest that the EC had violated the court order and therefore the elections were conducted in contempt of court.

I am shocked that you now say the entire election is a sham and therefore all the executives elect, are imposters. I doubt you would have said that if you won the elections. Once again, if you are minded to do, you can take a cue from what some people did by declaring yourself as NUGS President since they tell us that elections don’t matter in NUGS. Such a joke!

On a more serious note, my advice to you as a brother is that, you should let bygones be bygones. Prepare and come next year and I’m confident that you would have the blessing of the delegates. Take a cue from what happened to PaaQuecy Adu, the outgoing NUGS President, who made a come-back and won. Do not spoilt your chances my brother. Do not let people see you as a BAD LOSER. Do not waste the next one year litigating this matter in court because it would do you, NO GOOD.

Thank you.
